My service and community engagement center on creating opportunities for students to use language and develop their skills beyond the traditional classroom. My experience includes leading Aprendiendo a Leer, an after-school Spanish literacy program for K–5 students; mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in pedagogy, research, and quantitative tools; and supporting students through study abroad experiences in Madrid. These experiences reflect my commitment to connecting language education, mentorship, and community engagement.
Aprendiendo a Leer is an after-school program that helps K–5 bilingual students strengthen their Spanish literacy skills while deepening their engagement with the Spanish language and Latin American cultures. The program runs annually in collaboration with the Tippecanoe School Corporation in Lafayette, Indiana, and serves approximately 50 children each semester. Purdue students majoring and minoring in Spanish participate as teaching assistants, supporting children in reading and writing activities while also strengthening their own Spanish skills and gaining hands-on experience in language education and community engagement.
My mentoring experience spans pedagogy, research, and experiential learning. I have supported undergraduate Spanish majors and minors in developing teaching strategies to increase student engagement, as well as in using computational tools and language models such as Whisper and BETO for linguistic research. As a Teaching Assistant for Purdue’s Study Abroad program in Madrid, I also helped undergraduate students engage with Spanish language and culture through an immersive learning experience. In addition, I mentor members of the Second Language Acquisition Lab in quantitative data analysis using R.
As Social Chair of the Purdue Linguistics Association, I organized social and community-building events that brought together graduate students, faculty, and members of the broader linguistics community. Through this role, I contributed to fostering an inclusive and engaging environment beyond the classroom and research lab.
